What is Application-to-Person Messaging (A2P)?

A type of SMS or messaging traffic in which messages are sent from a business application or platform to an individual’s mobile device. Unlike Person-to-Person (P2P) messaging, which occurs between two individuals, A2P messaging is typically automated, large-scale, and used for business-to-customer communication.

It is widely used for:

-Transactional alerts (banking notifications, OTPs, booking confirmations)
-Promotional campaigns (offers, discounts, product launches)
-Customer engagement (reminders, loyalty updates, surveys)
-Authentication and security (2FA codes, fraud alerts)

A2P messaging is a key tool for enterprises because it provides high delivery rates, global reach, and instant connectivity, making it essential for marketing, customer support, and security communications.

Example use case: A ride-hailing app uses A2P SMS to send passengers real-time updates about their driver’s location, estimated arrival time, and trip receipts.
